Hopeful. Cheerful is what happens when hope pays off - so he smiles when he gets an unlatched door, and holds his offering up, one in each hand now.

"I know you buy both of these, but I couldn't remember which you get more often. So I got both."

That's explained at speed, before she has a chance to shut the door on his lack of serious purpose, and before he drops his gaze any lower than her face. Which he then does, although he's checking, not appraising. It's been a rough few weeks for the residents of the city, and he's been restricted to checking up on her at work, largely in a hurry, where a white coat can hide a multitude of things.

"I wanted to see you." There's the full truth. "I can eat mine on this side of the door, if you leave it open."
