who are we to tell ourselves that we're misunderstood

If she sees-- and of course she does, how could she miss it when the ring is her entire reason for being here-- she has the grace not to say anything. That's as much a measure of self-defense as anything else. She can't explain the way it fits, or the words inside-- not stolen, a mystery even to her-- without giving up her last few secret shreds of dignity.

"Thank you," she answers tonelessly, nodding slightly and shifting into a slightly less defensive posture as he stands. Slightly being the key word; she still looks utterly unwilling to be here.
