My husband was sick, when we were married; not with something I could catch from him, not something he would pass on if we had a child-- but sick enough that both of us knew he would die. I wasn't ready to be a mother-- I was in school then, and I'm still not ready, if that grants any perspective. But we wanted to make it so, if I ever did want a child and hadn't found someone new I wanted to be the father-- I'd be able to have his.

I think his focus was on the prophylactic function of condoms, as opposed to their use as a contraceptive device; which is an equally important topic, of course, particularly in the context he mentioned. In committed heterosexual relationships when disease is not a concern they're still sometimes utilized to prevent pregnancy, though frequently couples will opt for a different form of birth control that doesn't have such an impact on the act of sexual intercourse.

[Just sort of glossing over the scientific terms to the ones he does know, like birth. Shriek.]
