I'm a Starfleet officer. So was James' father. You can say it runs in the family.

From what I've seen of the show I understand, then, you're right. It probably isn't all that different.

I was afraid you'd say that. I guess it's for the best anyway. With him being a captain, I doubt he want his mother hovering around on her days off. He won't even let me call him Jimmy anymore, much less worry over him.

People do leave, from time to time, but I don't think there's any way to predict it. Or to affect it.

I'm sure he's glad for your visit, though.

So how do people leave if they can't choose how and when?

It seems like it, even if I have to remind him of how many hours of labor I went through when he starts feeling like testing his boundaries.

They just... do. Sometimes they know a little beforehand, long enough to say goodbye, but by and large they simply vanish.

It's nice that you had the chance to see him. To tell you the truth, I think I unsettle him a little.

That has to be hard on them, just to pick up and leave without a change to say goodbye.

I think it might be harder on the people left behind.

Put yourself in his place. Dealing with doubles is a little odd, especially when the person you know isn't at hand.

I would expect people get attached to each other here. Any port in a storm and everything.

Understandable, though he hasn't tried to backtalk you, right? It seems he feels he has the right to do it to me now, but if he does it to you, just tell him I gave you permission to set him straight.

And when people leave, most of the time you won't see them again.

He's always been polite. If it becomes an issue, though, I'll keep that in mind.
