[It's a view from the corner of a corner table in a dim saloon, with a shadowed figure sitting mostly in profile. A long, dark braid sitting along the edge of her jacket is the only visible hint of identity. She taps a soft rhythm on the tabletop with one fine-boned hand, not touching her drink.

The scant light is blocked, suddenly, as a stranger wanders over to her table. Miss Cameron doesn't look up.]

Keep walking.

[Posted Anonymously (until end of curse)]

It's pointless, I'm sure, to tell any of you not to trust the sudden gift of anonymity. Curses always end, and it wouldn't be the first time if it went wrong. The City hates secrets. But too often you don't get a choice in the matter. Compulsive posting is a common side effect of days like this.

So, I'll say this: tomorrow, try not to hold it against each other if something unexpected comes up.

I hope you all find what you're looking for.

Curses like this past weekend- No one should have to adjust to the kinds of things--

As always, there's never a real chance to rest between curses. I've always thought, if the City has one positive effect, it's building and reinforcing resilience.

You can never say back to normal, here, but I hope everyone is recovering well.

Maybe the less said about it, the better.

I'm looking for Dr. John Watson. I believe I have something of yours.

[Allison Cameron is sitting in a corner of the boat, packed in between the low wall of it and her sister, the latter's arm draped around her shoulders. She's bare-armed and shivering, her shawl having been handed off to a younger girl down the row.

Now, she's too weary and too cold to think, leaning against Olivia to conserve what little warmth she can. Her fingers are wrapped around a thick envelope, a little warped and water-spotted but not too damaged. From time to time she picks absently at the edge of it without looking.

Mostly, she watches the horizon and waits to see something. Anything.]

I need assistance from someone... capable of locating people within the City.

[A long pause, because she's asking for something wholly unscientific here, and that always makes her uncomfortable.]

I have reason to believe one of my neighbors is trapped somewhere-- not somewhere she can escape on her own. A place more like the desert-- physically separated from the City, but not outside it.

My best guess-- based on her last clear communication-- is this is the result of an attempt to leave the City, involving some sort of injection and an isolation tank.

Though it seemed successful in the video, I've received several messages from her since-- claiming she's stuck, though it's difficult to make out the details, there's some kind of interference.

I don't have much more information, but if you have any way to help-- well, I'll do what I can.

With all the confusion last month, I didn't even notice I'd passed the three year mark in the City. I wish I could say experience has given me an edge on getting by through curses and semi-natural disasters, but it's never that easy; most of the advice I could give is just common knowledge here.

I'd say the most important thing is not to put too much trust in patterns. Patterns in curses, in schedules, in what is or isn't possible. Repetition allows for prediction, and adaptation; keeping things inconsistent makes it more difficult for us to get used to it, to take the City in stride. No matter what you believe the purpose of this place to be, that does seem to be one of the few constants: keeping us all unsettled.

I'd also recommend, if you find yourself cursed, putting your device somewhere out of reach to minimize the amount of trouble it can cause... but of course, depending on your circumstances, you don't always have that option.

[ooc; will be butting into your business if she knows you well enough to do so; may deliver generic advice otherwise.]

Needless to say, if you woke up this morning and found yourself wanting toilet paper, dryer lint, or lightbulbs for breakfast, it's probably a curse. Given the usual situation in the City, that's a much likelier explanation than a widespread outbreak of Pica.

[Cameron is sitting at a desk, looking a bit on edge, but speaking calmly.]

Unfortunately, there aren't many options for treating a curse, and-- with half or more of our staff in the desert, here, and the hospital there out of commission-- the resources we have for counsel and restraint are limited. So think of this as a public service announcement.

Just because the curse makes you want something, doesn't mean it can't make you sick. Aside from the potential for accidental poisoning or bacterial infection, sharp-edged items will damage your mouth, throat, and stomach. Hair, fabric, paper, and other soft materials can cause gastrointestinal obstruction-- cats aren't the only creatures that get hairballs, but removing a trichobezoar usually requires surgery.

[The sharp-eyed may notice there's a piece of paper with a raggedly torn edge in front of her, but Cameron's not looking at it.]

If you can't control your cravings, get someone to help you. If you can't, we'll try to find you assistance.

It's not clear yet whether the curse affects the digestive tract as well as the appetite. If you've eaten something you shouldn't have-- something poisonous, sharp, or indigestible and too large to pass-- come by the hospital. By tomorrow-- assuming the curse doesn't persist-- we should have an idea of whether you'll require further treatment, and it's always better to be safe than sorry.

[She switches off the device, but for one reason or another the audio lingers a second longer-- just long enough to capture a quiet tearing sound.]

[ooc; assuming some NPCs are affected by the curse, but if anyone would like to say they saw Cam today / action thread a hospital visit here, feel free~ There are of course no curses on the Sand side, but she doesn't know that. Also backdated to earlier today ><]

[Hair wild and legs bare, Cameron's sitting on the floor in the midst of a huge sprawl of bits and pieces of beautiful things, focused and indecisive. One by one she opens little jars of color; considering, deciding against, trying another. A few pairs of shoes-- nicer than the nice ones she habitually wears, not work shoes by any stretch-- are tossed haphazardly around her.

Cameron sets a tube of lipstick down beside the device, and notices the light. She just looks amused, picking it up. The picture wavers as it becomes a closeup. She's wearing the slightest of smirks, her eyes already darkly lined and shaded-- more makeup, it's safe to say, than she usually wears in a week.]

OPEN ACTION;

[The smart thing to do, on a day like today, would be to stay home. But of course, the fact that there's a ridiculous curse doesn't preclude people from getting sick or injured or worse, and Cameron's not quite selfish enough to skip work to avoid the embarrassment.

What she can do is try to stay out of the way, off on side streets and indirect corridors inside the Hospital, to try and keep it to a minimum. And carry around a small bottle of mouthwash in her purse. She's been here long enough to know, ultimately, there's not much you can do when the City's mind is made up.]

Two of those weekends in one month. I don't remember that ever happening, for as long as I've been here. Does that kind of chaos better serve the Deities' aims, I wonder? Is it due to sensory adaptation, to the fact that curses don't shock us as much as they used to? One would think bringing new Citizens into captivity would compensate for that, but maybe isn't enough.

Or maybe it's just a clerical error.

Needless to say, I hope it doesn't become a pattern. Though, at least if it did, we'd just get used to it.

[Tilt your head; the camera's on its side, a blurry expanse of countertop framing one edge of a well-kept kitchen. Cameron's, if you'd have reason to recognize it. After a moment the faint hissing in the background becomes a whistle, steam pouring out the spout of a teakettle.

The picture blurs and refocuses as a man comes into the picture, wearing a thankfully far-too long t-shirt over a tight-stretched pair of extremely feminine pajama pants. He-- or really, of course, she, if you hadn't figured-- pours the water into a waiting mug, and stands waiting a moment, palms on the corner of the counter, for the tea to steep.

Finally Cameron adds a half-spoon of sugar, and takes the tea back off camera. You might catch a deep, long-suffering sigh in the background noise.

The image stays on the empty kitchen until the recording times out.]

Right now, as she does most days, Cameron is trying to have a nice, relaxing cup of coffee; as is too often the case, she's set out to do so without looking into possible curses. [The camera is trained on a table. On the table is a carton of eggs, a pile of newspapers, some plastic cups, some bubble wrap, several rolls of several kinds of tape; scissors, packing peanuts (the biodegradable sort, of course,) a few cans and plastic canisters, cardboard tubes from toilet paper rolls, paper towels, some twine, some fishing line, a few distressingly-shaped surgical implements, clamps, cotton balls, and a number of other assorted items. And a half-full bottle of Elmer's glue, because half-full bottles of Elmer's glue always turn up when you get this kind of junk together. Something inaudible is muttered and the picture sways a little before moving in-- not zooming, because this is not that kind of nice camerawork, but physically moving closer-- to the carton of eggs. After another moment it pulls back and wobbles up, to show Allison Cameron standing with her hands on her hips, looking firm, measured, and totally in control.]

This exercise was designed for the staff of City General, but if anyone else wants to try their hand you're welcome to join us. [She smiles coolly.] We have plenty of supplies.

[She leans over slightly and picks up the box of eggs.]

Your task today is to design a container that will hold and protect one ordinary egg, keeping it from breaking when the container is dropped. You'll have three hours to design and build your boxes. Once everyone has finished, they'll be dropped from successively greater heights-- first five feet, then ten, and subsequently from the windows of the hospital, on different floors. The egg that survives the longest-- from the highest drop, that is-- is the winner.

Supplies are in the third floor lounge. I encourage you to work in pairs.

[She smiles, a tight and authoritative little curve of her lips. Whoever she has roped into filming this deserves an award for putting up with the (mostly) curse-induced craziness.]

There will be a prize for the winner. Good luck.

I remember reading, somewhere, that upwards of eighty percent of New Year's Resolutions are abandoned, many of them within the first few weeks of the year. Whether that's because people tend to set unreasonable goals, or because the superstition surrounding New Year's Eve isn't strong enough to provide the necessary motivation, I can't say.

A more realistic goal would be to indulge in reflection a little more frequently, and not leave it all for the depths of winter. To change when change is necessary. To act instead of merely reacting. Manageable goals with concrete progress markers might not be as impressive as quitting smoking cold turkey, or losing a hundred pounds, or writing a novel, but they have a better success rate. That, at least, seems worth a resolution.

This room has a door, and the door is securely locked. By a lot of locks, actually. More locks than any sane person puts on a door, spanning the whole right edge, with a few scattered along the top, even on the hinge side. Most of them have simple knobs to turn; a few dangling security chains are clipped in place, and one or two can only be opened by a key. Of course, lucky you, these are all on your side, meaning you’re not trapped here. Right?

Except, locks are meant to keep things out. Slowly, certainly, the knobs are starting to turn, as whoever-- or whatever-- is on the other side of the door makes their way in.

CIPA (Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis) is a rare, inherited condition where the patient is incapable of feeling physical pain or differences in temperature. While this might sound like a stroke of luck to anyone who's ever suffered chronic pain, or even anyone who's had a really bad toothache, it's an extremely dangerous condition that can potentially shorten the lifespan of the affected individual significantly. As numerous others have discussed, the experience of pain, while unpleasant, serves a purpose: it lets us know something is wrong, and often gives us a clue to what the problem might be. Take away that sensitivity, and the individual might never know they're sick or injured to begin with.

Because it's caused by a genetic mutation, CIPA is a lifelong condition and as such presents immediately. Due to their inability to sweat, more than half of all children born with CIPA die of overheating before the age of three. Those surviving are in danger of sustaining injuries, sometimes serious ones, in ways that someone who can feel pain would not; babies are given to chewing on their lips, tongues and extremities or scratching their eyes. Infections and bone fractures are not uncommon, and often go undiagnosed in their early stages because the patient is unaware of them. As such, it is important for the parents of CIPA patients (and for the patients themselves, once they become old enough to understand their condition) to routinely check for damage to their bodies and to avoid situations where overheating or injuries could occur.

She tilts her head as she spreads out one of its fins with her fingers, an expression of concern curving pale lips. Rather indistinct in the shadows of the room her tail swishes, the pale scales along the center glinting faintly as they catch a stray sunbeam filtering down.

Finally satisfied in whatever she's considering, she lets the fish go; it wriggles a little and rounds to hover at a level with her face. It's obvious they're talking, but the sound doesn't carry far enough to make it out. Eventually the mermaid smiles and the fish dips slightly, the gesture strangely reminiscent of a bow, and heads offscreen.

The mer-doctor stays where she is for a moment, half-seated on some outcropping, before brushing her wayward hair back behind her ears and swimming towards the camera, collecting her device and turning it off without ever noticing it was on in the first place.]

[ooc; there was going to be a shooped picture but there's no shooped picture :X mer-Cameron. random, open actionpost! Feel free to encounter her anywhere ocean-y, or sunning by the beach or whatnot, swimming around and doing her mermaid thing <3 as always backdating friendly~]

[The picture comes up, obviously not an intentional broadcast, slightly out of focus an off its angle. A glittering pile of broken glass on a table shatters and reflects the light into odd shapes on the walls and ceiling. Next to that, if you can make it out, is a handgun.

Allison Cameron is too busy to notice that she's been caught on film, leaning on the radiator and bracing a broken chair across her window as a makeshift bar. The pane is shattered, but a large, clear trashbag has been duct taped over the opening. Outside on the fire escape is a dead sheep; there are small smears of blood visible on the jagged pieces of glass left on the sill. Eventually she manages to wedge the plank in place, and wanders off screen to fortify other windows. Until the connection times out, there's only the dead sheep staring, blurred by the plastic sheeting, flexing softly in the breeze.]

[ooc; please assume this was posted at some point after the widespread attacks begin this evening, i know it's up a little early but i wasn't sure i'd have a chance later. sorry for any inconvenience]

If I lived anywhere else I'd assume I'd been robbed. As it is, a curse seems likely. I can only hope everything will be back tomorrow. At least they had the decency to leave the cat's things alone.

[longest ooc ever sob sorry ;_;] )

It occurred to me recently that it's almost a year since that monster attacked; which means I've been here over a year. I suppose the date was some time in February; I didn't do anything to commemorate it, or even think about it too much until now.

It's strange though, to think about the passage of time here-- the thought that all of this experience will simply disappear, eventually, when we're allowed to leave. How we choose to lead our lives here is only relevant as long as we remain. I wonder how different I am now from the person I'll be in a year of real time.

Questions without answers, really.

[Private to Angela]

I said it the other day, I know, but-- given that I was cursed... Thank you, again.

[EDIT; off to bed & picking up tags tomorrow dearhearts <3]
